TEXAS AGENT TRANSITION GUIDE

Plan your brokerage move
with your clients in mind.

A good transition starts before the sponsorship request. Review your agreement, coordinate ongoing business and confirm the new brokerage’s costs and responsibilities.

A practical transition checklist

  1. Compare the written plan.

Review commission splits, monthly and per-closing fees, transaction coordination, optional lead costs, services and production requirements. Talk with the new broker about onboarding and your business goals.

    Compare MODR’s published terms
  2. Review your current agreement and open business.

Check your current brokerage’s termination procedures. Discuss pending transactions, listings, representation agreements and earned compensation with the brokers before assuming they transfer with you. TREC notes that ending sponsorship can affect ongoing representation.

  3. Communicate the termination in writing.

TREC’s guidance calls for immediate written notice when a sales agent intends to terminate sponsorship. An online sponsorship change does not replace written communication to the sponsoring broker.

  4. Follow TREC’s current sponsorship instructions.

Use TREC’s official license-management resources to coordinate the change with your new broker. Confirm your active license and sponsorship status before conducting brokerage activities under the new sponsorship. Portal instructions can change; use the current TREC guidance linked below.

  5. Complete the operational handoff.

Coordinate approved file and contact handling, advertising updates, association and MLS changes, insurance arrangements and access to brokerage systems. Complete the new broker’s onboarding before presenting yourself as affiliated.
